Tec Mage Chapter Four: Magic And Blacksmithing

Atlas, Dracken, Mary and Kevien stood around the open front door

"What a dirty mess" Dracken shouted

"Yes but with lots of elbow grease and team work we can get it done in good time" explained Atlas

Kevien moaned "i dont want to do this"

"Yeaa" said Mary

This was the first time that they had spoken out like this

Atlas had a couple of choices how to deal with this, he decided to use logic

"At the moment we have no where to stay, this place has been paid for with the quest of upgrading, any job we take we need a place to rest afterwards, and also this place is very secured and near most things in the city"

The apprentices were shifting there feet about, Atlas had not won them over

"How about on the seventh day you can have a day off with all your pay so you can do what you want to do" said Atlas

"Yea" shouted the apprentices

"Good then lets start working"

The first thing Atlas had done was to get more eqiument, food, wood and new books from the library but this time they where all about simple magic's and the understanding of mana

Atlas had one day before the promise of a day off for his apprentices, they cleared the lobby, they had made three piles of things, the first was base metals, wood and leather form broken swords and leather armour that was ripped the 2nd pile was just crap, things that Atlas had no use for at all and the third pile was of broken furniture

They then moved into the lobby and opened more doors leading to what Atlas could only describe as a dojo hall full of broken scarecrow, weapons, furniture and chest

Atlas knew it would take longer then a day so he decide to clean the lobby up

Water was brought from the fountain using buckets borrowed from the training hall as well as mops and brushes, moping and scrubbing they had finished cleaning the lobby in no time

"Ok kids, Good job, set up your gear in a corner and you can start your break now

Atlas handed out 3 silver to each of his apprentices

"have a good time" said Atlas

Atlas watched as the three kids left the grounds, then pulling a broken chest forward he started to fix it, two hours later he had fixed three chests and was sitting on one of them reading the magic books

It turns out mana was like atoms in the way that everything has mana, but it takes a high level of understanding and control to see and use mana out side the body

Atlas sat on the floor using Seiza the aikido kneeing technique, meditating Atlas searched his body for his mana, keeping his mind clear Atlas cornered each part of his body.

He just couldn't find the mana, perhaps he was looking to deep and hard, so he looked at him self as a whole, if everything had mana it was more likely to be in every part of him.

Two hours later Atlas had found his mana, in his minds eye it was a human shape but also changing shape every second it shifted shape just slightly,

The colour was transparent except the very edge of the human shaped mana it was shinning silver

Atlas picked up the book again and sat down on the chest, finding his place again he started to read

Atlas was searching for simple magic and he found two, both of these spells were non elemental they were mana flare, a spell that caused light by using mana it cause very little heat, and the other was magic missiles, a missile made out of pure mana that you could direct using mana as a conduit

Atlas looked for more about mana flare, it turned out that to create mana flare you had to manifest two pieces of mana out side the body and rub them together in till they ignited

After the ignition the flame would sustain it self by taking a steady amount of mana

Atlas went back to Seiza to work on the mana flare, keeping his mind clear he thought of the manifesting of the two pieces of mana out side his body then rubbing them together, eyes closed he repeated the Process six times in total, in till though his eye lids he saw light and got a message

Ding

You have learned mana flare

level one beginner takes 10 mana to make the flame and 1 mana per second to sustain it

"That will do for today" Atlas said, he then put the chest he repaired into the lobby beside each of the kids stuff and moved on to the training hall, he was behind his students and didn't even have the spear mastery

In the training hall Atlas activated the mana flare, picked up a wooden spear and started to strike the upgraded scarecrow

Two hour later Atlas got a message

str + 1

30 minutes after the first str stat another message came up

Ding

Agility + 1 Vitality + 1

[Skills: Spear mastery level 1]

Increases Attack Power with a spear by 10%.
Increases Attack Speed with a sword by 3%.

Atlas practice in till midnight, he kept the mana flare on in till it ran out, after he finished he felt sticky and went to the lobby to get some sleep in game and in real life, as he laid down to log off he looked over to the kids all three of them were asleep, Atlas log out

After having six hours sleep Ben log back in the game, he was in the same position and still sticky from the sweat of working out, it was the black of night so Atlas activated mana flare, the kids were a sleep so Atlas went out side and upto a bucket of water, quickly washing up he felt better but still a little sticky

Atlas was wondering what should he do, as he pondered he walked to the training hall

"Hey there" said Borin, it seemed that the instructor didn't sleep

"Hello Borin........ could you give me some advise"

"Sure, what's a matter" Borin looked at bit worried

"Its the kids... i'm not sure which direction i should take them, they all want different things and im just one man" explained Atlas

Borin understood what was going on

"You have spread your self to thin, most times a master/teacher only takes one pupil at a time and when that pupil gets to a certain level they can help with the next apprentice, i'm guessing that they all want different things and to concentrate on one will alienate the other two" explained Borin

Atlas was grateful this was he's problem at the moment but by talking it out he already thought of a way to get started with each of his apprentices goals

All Atlas needed to do was have a discussion with the kids about his plans and how they thought about it

It was still very late at night, too soon to wake his apprentices up and so he talked to Borin

"Hey Borin"

"Yes" replied Borin

"Can i change some things about the warehouse" Atlas asked

Borin was a bit troubled, the upgrades on the scarecrow was well made but they were all replaceable and no concern if they broke, but buildings cost a lot of money and if destroyed can cost a arm and a leg

"What are you planing" Borin said

"Don't worry i can't do it straight away, i need equipment that this town doesn't sell and skills that i don't have" explained Atlas

"Yes i understand but what do you want to do" Borin asked

Atlas thought for a moment, in game world they didn't have this thing

"Well, where i'm from we call it a shower, its to clean yourself when standing, it uses less water than a bath and it's quick and easy to use ,the water is hot and it will help with me and my apprentices" explained Atlas

Atlas carried on "All i need is a room that i can change"

Borin spoked up "ok i will give permission if you get the blacksmith skill and even though this isn't a must i would like you to talk to the architect guild"

"Yes i'll do both of those thing" Atlas said he was planning to go to the blacksmith soon and the other thing could be useful

Altas was carrying a big barrel that he had repaired over to the fountain, using a bucket he filled it half way, trying to lift was not possible let alone lifting it all the way back to the lobby area

he then went back to the pile of materials that he and the apprentice cleared out from the lobby and made a simply pull cart, it didn't take long, back at the fountain Atlas empted the barrel and placed it on the pull cart and started to fill it up to the brim

Back outside the lobby Atlas placed the barrel in the corner and started to make something

Ding

Mana flare is now level 3

level three beginner takes 8 mana to make the flame and 1 mana every three seconds to sustain it

Mana flare was almost at the stage where Atlas could have it on all the time with out running out of mana, he wouldn't run out of mana but also wouldn't gain any if used

Fixing some shelfs, bookcase and tables Atlas heard one of his apprentices get up, the sliding door opened it was Kevien

"Morning Kevien, foods on that table and some water over there in the barrel for cleaning and drinking"

Kevien didn't say anything he was looking at Atlas or just above him

Unauthorized reproduction: this story has been taken without approval. Report sightings.

"What's that" Kevien was pointing at the mana flare

Atlas looked at his mana flare it was still early so he hadn't detracted it

"Oh that, its my mana flare, its just very simply magic i learned so i could see when working in the dark" replied Atlas

Kevien had eyes of wonder it was plane to see that he was inchanted by mana flare

Kevien was smaller and don't say very much compared to the other two but when it came to his turn to read the books he was clear and very rarely made mistakes

"Do you want to learn how to make a mana flare" asked Atlas

"YEA" Kevien almost shouted

Atlas placed a finger on his lips, it was still early and the apprentices needed sleep

"Come over here then" Atlas pointed to the ground

Atlas spent 1 hour with Kevien explaining how mana worked and how it was in everything, also what Seiza was and how it help with mana manipulation, then he told him to go into seiza and look into his body for the mana

"Mana it self isn't in one part of the body but in the whole, looking to hard in one place you may miss the whole" Atlas was explaining to the best of his ability

"I...I SEE IT" shouted Kevien

"Good but keep your voice down for now, what colour and shape is it" Atlas said in a hushed voice

"The colour is red but the shape is weird, it keeps changing shape, most of the time its a human shape" explained Kevien

Atlas didn't have that much experience in magic , the colour was different but the shape thing was the same so he carried on

"Ok the book says to visualize two pieces of mana and rub then together"

It took Kevien 12 trys to start his flare but it was different, instead of Atlas mana flare it was a fire flare that poured out a lot more heat than his

"Wh...why is it different" asked Kevien

Kevien's fire flare was shaking, it was a bit unstable

"I'm not sure but keep calm, it looks like your flame is linked to your emotions, go into seiza and meditate " said Atlas

Kevien looked worried and more nervous than Atlas had ever seen him. After 10 minutes the flame stabilized

"This is all speculation but your mana was the colour of red, mine is transparent, i think that you are more inclined to fire magic" Atlas explained

"Don't worry we will go to the mages guild and find out later but in till then only use this skill when your near me, some water or have some water on you, do you understand"

"Ye... yes i understand" answered Kevien

"Well, now that you v'e done that it should be easer to activate, the more you use the spell the better it becomes go ahead try using it" Atlas said

At that point the door slammed open

"What are you two talking about" Dracken shouted

Atlas was thinking that Dracken was probably the leader but sometimes it went over the top and seemed a bit of a bully

"Food is on that table and some water over there, so wash up and then i'll tell you what me and Kevien been talking about"

"No tell me now" Dracken almost shouted

At this outburst Atlas held out his hand in front of Dracken

"Stop, why are you talking to me this way, do you think i deserve the way your talking to me" Atlas asked

"No" Dracken was getting flushed in the checks

"Then tell me what's wrong, i might be able to help you" Atlas said

"No it nothing" at these words Dracken turned away and marched to the water barrel

"His money was taken from him, when he visited Shara, he managed to beat two of the thugs but he was over whelmed" Kevien explained

"Did he use a spear, stick or even what i taught him" asked Atlas

"Yes and no, he started well with evading and hitting them but when he got hit by the two behind him he lost he's temper and just jumped in fighting who ever he could reach" Kevien explained

Atlas thought about this, Dracken needed some other kind of training

"Kevien, go and wake up Mary please" asked Atlas

As Kevien left, Atlas walked up to Dracken

"Dracken,..... Dracken" Atlas said

"YES" said Dracken

"Calm down, i'm here to help you, you don't have to be so angry" said Atlas

"Ok....ok" Dracken was calming down

"Don't be angry but Kevien told me what happened" Atlas put his hand up again

"No, keep calm, this is the main reason why you lost, you get too angry and lost your self, the other reason is my fault, but i will be teaching you and them the unarmed techniques in aikido" explained Atlas

With his hand on Dracken shoulder, Atlas steered him to the table with food, at that moment Mary and Kevien came out side

"Over here" shouted Atlas

The apprentices shrouded the table with food

"First i want you clean up and eat then come over here, i want to discus what we will be doing next" said Atlas

After 20 minutes the kids were fed and watered and wandered over to where Atlas was sitting

"Sit down kids, like i said before lets talk about what we want to do for this week"

They all sat down, crossing there legs together

"First things first , i was talking to Kevien before you woke up Mary, and i was teaching him about magic, show them Kevien" explained Atlas

Kevien inhaled and a small fire flare appeared in front of him

Both of them gasped, they both had seen magic before but they knew Kevien didn't have any magic yesterday

Now the first thing we are going to do is get you two up to where Kevien is at

Two hours went by and Dracken had a blue flare and Mary had a fire flare like Keviens

Dracken was a lot happier playing with his blue flare bumping it into the other two flares

"Ok that's that, the next thing we must do is clear the rest of this building out but before we do that lets discus about what we want from this week efforts" said Atlas

"Money, power" suggested Dracken

"I want to learn blacksmithing" Mary squealed

"More magic" Kevien asked

"Ok got it lets get this building cleared out so we can get started" said Atlas

A day later, with high morale they had cleaned out the dojo and placed all items that were in there out side in the corresponding piles, there was a huge amount of rubbish but lots of useful stuff too

The dojo had a huge area where Atlas guessed it was used for practise, it also had many storage areas and a living room/kitchen

"Next part of the plan" Atlas said while clapping his hands

20 minutes later the group was in town, the plan was simple, get a blacksmith to teach them and pay them during the day while using there magic, and at twilight try to learn more simple magic from books

Atlas knew the area petty well and heard there was a dwarf blacksmith looking for a hand with a big delivery, Atlas found the place, it was weird, blacksmiths are mostly in the centre of the city but this one was out of the way

Entering the shop Atlas could hear the banging of hammer on metal but that was it, no voices could be heard

"Hello" shouted Atlas

The hammering stopped, and a dwarf came around the corner leaning hard on a cane

"What do you want" the dwarf said

"I heard that you may need some help" Atlas said

The dwarf looked up "yea, what of it"

"Well we can help you if you teach us blacksmithing and pay us" explained Atlas

"No i don't need that many people's help" explained the dwarf

Atlas didn't know if all dwarfs were difficult or if it was just this person personality

"How about this then you pay these three and i'll work for free as long as you teach us all blacksmithing" Atlas suggested

"......... yea that's fine but you got to do as i say no back chatting" explained the dwarf

"Right i understand but we only work to sun up to sun down, is that ok and what's the pay" Atlas explained

"You get nothing but those can have 50 coppers a day" the dwarf gestured towards Dracken, Mary and Kevien

"This is going to one of those weeks Atlas" thought to him self

Ding

Blacksmiths Punishment

The blacksmith has agreed to train you and your apprentices, but only pay the apprentices
Make 1000 swords within two weeks

Difficulty level: D

Quest requirements:
Must do as told
No answering back

Will you accept the quest.

Atlas looked at the mission

"Blacksmiths punishment what does that mean and the difficulty was too high for making swords"

There was some thing hidden, Atlas knew it but they needed this skill, 1) for the shower of the dojo and 2) for Mary's dreams

"I agree" said Atlas

Ding

You accepted the quest.

"When do we start" asked Atlas

"Suns up, you belong to me" shouted the dwarf
