One day the entire world fell asleep at the same time. No matter who or where, all people fell into a deep slumber. During that singular moment, a single dream was shared between the disparate members of humanity. It was a dream about creating a new life in a new world. Many people died during the first dream. Drivers crashed their vehicles. Surgeons collapsed atop their patients. Workers fell from rooftops, and many others met their end during the time that the first dream was forced upon humanity.

Despite the tragedy of that day, the strangely videogame like nature of that dream and the world presented therein has caught the world in a web of interest and intrigue. One young man, decides to change his life by living for that strange new world and its untapped possibilities.

Change the Picture Please!!!!!

This is a quality work for real. I like the imagination of the author and the style.

But the picture on the main page is a major turn off as it looks like a uber ugly drawing and that my friend kept me away from your work for a very long time. If only I was not bored I would have not touched this page at all and I would have missed this good story. Please do get another picture for your work as it will continue to make others like me to stir away from your story.

Other than that I appreciate the work very much and it is entertaining in its own way. Not for all and not for the nitpicking freaks out there. Please continue writing and hopefully you will finish it as the number of good story writers going AWOL in RL is very high and I would hate to see that happening to you.

Sincerely,

A fan and A well wisher.

A diamond among mud

Have to say. This story had few views, but I got dragged in by the number of chapters, since I had nothing better to do and this amount of chapters were bound to kill some time.

I had very little expectations when I started reading and I was pleasantly surprised. The story is well paced, with a main character who is free spirited yet reasonable enough to be a convincing person, as opposed to howo some stories make those super heroic or intelligent characters that have no excuse to be like that considering that half of them are normal people.

And though there is no real main story fleshed out so far, I'd say there doesn't have to be one. In my educated opinion, those kind of stories about new worlds should focus more around the character exploring rather than a big bad or some main great objective. It is fun to explore and learn for no reason other than curiosity, and if some sort of main story starts to form in the middle of this exploration, then so be it.

Basically, I strongly recommend you to give it a try. It really grows on you after the first 2 chapters.

Basically, I came for the number of chapters, stayed for the quality.

I'm kind of shocked.

This story is NOT a reincarnation story, NOT a transportation story, and NOT a virtual reality story… and yet, it is somehow is all of them. Even if you ignore his impeccable writing, flowing style, and really fleshed out character, this story is a 5/5.

My Favorite Scott Story - Steady, Amusing, Mature, and Well Thought Through

Highly recommended! Scottf14 is an experienced writer and the lessons from his prior works definitely help this story shine.

This review covers my thoughts through Chapter 21.2.

1) Style – 4.25

The prose is clear and descriptive. The writing is often crafted to create comedic moments / situations; however, it delivers some impressive, emotionally touching ones as well. In terms of plot advancement and fighting/grinding, I would say the style is  straightforward. The early battles are less complex than the ones in Origin ARS (Scottf14's other VR tale); however, a later combat sequence displayed excellent blow-by-blow action. Essentially it is easy and fun to read. Scottf14's flair for dialogue and innuendo is quite good so expect plenty of tweeks to your funny bone. For this site, I’d say his approach is excellent.

One minor complaint that holds true for many of Scott’s stories is that the MCs rarely face stressful antagonism or painful challenges. The result? The reader never doubts or worries about the possibility of the MC failing or suffering a massive setback. It is hard to beat the author up regarding this choice because his stories seem oriented towards good humored wish-fulfillment rather than the grim dark fantasy of “Red Wedding” Game of Thrones.

If the style included more lyrical and complex literary passages, I’d probably give it 5 stars but then again those passages might well just piss off other readers so it’s likely good that Scott14f isn’t pandering to my deviant tastes.

2) Story – 5.0

I like it. Sure, it is a bit on the popcorn side – light and fluffy entertainment, but Blackthorn is an example of good planning and execution. It has a well thought through magic and game system as well as an excellent, slow to reveal backstory. It benefits from crossovers and longer term story arcs. The balance of action, adventure, character-oriented dialogue, and world-building gives this work a "novel" like feeling. It is a delight to see themes and side-characters appear and then reappear as the story progresses.

3) Grammar – 4.25

Sentences only suffer from occasional spelling mistakes or omissions. Sometimes the author is too quick to reiterate a sentence when less would = more. The story would benefit from more structurally advanced, experimental , and varied takes on phrasing such as intriguing metaphors / similes. But all these criticisms are kinda nit-picky. To be clear, I’m grading Scott as a native English speaker…his grammar deserves a 10.0 out of 5.0 when compared to non-English Native authors.

4) Character – 4.5

Well portrayed and consistent. I do feel the darker, abused side of the MC has fallen by the wayside since it was first identified/explored. But then again, the MC is in a happier place now. I think the author’s dialogue is particularly strong and he deserves credit for excellent mature, adult discussions and painfully evocative workplace parody. Chpt 12 – 15 and the more recent (?18-21?) arcs have helped push my character rating to 4.5. Side-characters have enjoyed expanded "return" rolls and the depth of the main-characters has benefited from additional dialogue and interaction. Even if the characters aren’t quite (?yet?) complex enough for me to award them with 5.0 Stars…they are just so damn likable it makes me feel like a heel to just allocate them 4.0 as a score.

I enjoy the writing, and I enjoy the story. I’ve also read Galataea Crystallim, so I know to expect a lot of harem-erotica to happen. However, I know that is the author’s personal taste and fantasy, and I don’t mind it because I also enjoy it.

As for advice I can give to the author, I would say try to develop the child-hood friend character a little more before things get serious. Stories still new and being built, I know, but I still feel like she is lacking in motivation as a character. Why does she like Scott so much? Why does she not mind a harem? Why in particular is she so focused on helping Scott become strong and attracting more women toward him?

I’ll say that you’ve already thoroughly convinced me that Sonja and Tits-Mcpouts ‘like’ Scott, because they’ve interacted with him constantly and have created an emotional attachment to him. But I’m not convinced about Sharde, especially to the point where you could say she ‘loves’ him. The connection between her, the sister, and Scott isn’t really too clear yet beyond the fact that they knew each other very well in childhood.

I’m sure there will be future developments between them, but I definitely want to see the development before more harem members join the folds and Sharde will have a forced position as harem-lead.

This is just my personal opinion after reading thus-far though! Please don’t take it as me demanding anything of you, or asking you to make major changes. I love the story and look forward to more :).

P.S. If you do read this and if anyone harasses you about the harem-erotica stuff, don’t mind them because there’s apparently a group of people who float around that have an issue with harems I guess. But there are also a fair amount of people who enjoy it, but are too shy to comment ;).

Hahahaha, WTF. the picture changed which is good... but still... WTF...

-0.5 for the picture, the story is all-overall good but the drama is a bit... hmmm... somehow doesn't fit. the story progresses in a mellow, and cheesy romance-theme on the latter part but his hidden dark past somehow doesn't fit... that's just me, the feeling irks me but it's still good. Also can you put the link of the cover picture without the censorship, i am mildly curious of what hides underneath that square black ominous covering.

as expected of scottf14, he really knows how to write a story.  i love how this is so different from other stories.  he always comes out with new ideas for his stories and they are really good.  i like how the mc is not just gettin op quick and that his journey is hard, painful, and long.  really looking forward to what happens

Title says it all. Characters are developing, the world is rapidly changing, and there is enough comedy to relieve the occasional 'blood bath'. It's usually just a lot of murdering of talking vegetables XD

I wrote this review for a reddit thread that was deleted before I could post.

The story is fairly decent but this author is somewhat notorious (to me anyway) on RR. Scottf14 has a few other successful series, Origin A.R.S and Nocturne for instance, and all of them seem to follow the same basic story shape. A really cool RPG world is built and then the male 20s-30s hero falls in love with one or more women but never has intimate relations with any of them. That isn't necessarily a character flaw but these adult male main characters are written more like shy blushing 13 year old boys or else some weird vision of masculinity that constantly flirts and goes to 1st or 2nd base but is unable to comprehend how adult relationships work.

I got about halfway through blackthorne before realizing it is an author that generally disappoints me. This might be just what you're looking for if you like fantasy RPG style stories that randomly get disrupted by young adult style romance storylines for chapters at a time.
